Private Markets Are Not Outside Global Financial Conditions

Private ownership changes how market stress appears; it does not eliminate exposure.

Public and private markets connect

Private investments depend on financing markets, bank lending, institutional allocations and exit opportunities. A private valuation can adjust more slowly than a listed market price without being insulated from the same economic forces.

What the IMF observes

The IMF April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report highlights the role of nonbank intermediaries in cross-border portfolio flows and warns that risk-sensitive investors can amplify volatility during market stress.

Implications for investors

Committees should assess debt maturities, refinancing rates, currency exposures, unfunded commitments and the liquidity terms of their investment vehicles. Stable reported net asset values should not be treated as proof of low risk.

A disciplined approach

Stress-test both operating performance and access to capital. Liquidity and governance deserve the same attention as return targets.
